As we move into our first full week of February, we will begin what the students have been waiting for all year long...CURSIVE! Spelling homework is going to be quite different the next few weeks. Students will be very excited to start writing in cursive. I ask that you watch them practice their cursive handwriting each night. NO SPELLING WORDS will be done in cursive this week. No other work will be in cursive until you hear it from me! So please continue to do all assignments(except cursive handwriting practice) in manuscript.
Please do not hesitate to email me if you have any questions. Friday, February 9: Spirit Day and HALF DAY DISMISSAL-No Lunches Monday, February 19: NO SCHOOL-Presidents Day Tuesday, February 27: Peter Piper Pizza Night Here is a look at this week: This week: Cursive- Each night, in the spelling packet, there will be a sheet for your child to practice their cursive handwriting. Please have them write each lower case letter 3 times in the space provided. Please make sure they take their time and form their letters correctly. Spalding- There will be no words on MONDAY! Your scholar will have 20 new words this week. Each night, your scholar will receive a piece of paper, in their red folder, with the 9 or 11 words that were studied in class that day. Please dictate the words to your scholar 3 times in different orders. As your scholar writes the words, they need to also do the markings for each word. Please have your scholar write their words in their best Spalding handwriting. Markings need to be done on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday you should dictate all 20 words to your scholar. Markings are not required on Thursday. ****If your child is misspelling a word, please mark it wrong and have them correct it on their homework. Scholars need to study phonograms 1-70 every night. If your scholar can say all 70 phonogram sounds, please practice having them write their phonograms as you dictate to them. Math- We will continue to learn more mental math strategies and how to apply them to addition with numbers through the hundreds. There will be a quiz on Thursday. On Friday we will review how to subtract ones and tens. Please continue to work on basic math facts at home with your child. Addition and subtraction facts through 20 should be mastered by the end of the year. History- In history we will continue our unit on Westward Expansion. We will continue studying the Oregon Trail and Native Americans. There will be a quiz on Friday. Please continue to ask your child about what they learned in class that day! Literature- We will continue to read Cricket in Times Square. We will read through chapter 12 this week. The students are truly enjoying this story of Chester Cricket, Tucker the Mouse, and Harry the Cat! Writing and Grammar- We will continue to work with nouns, verbs, and adverbs.
