We are in our final week of January! The weather is beautiful and I'm looking forward to the new week ahead! Below you will find some important dates and a look at the week ahead.
Friday, February 2: Jump Rope for Heart Kick Off Event 5-7pm Friday, February 9: Spirit Day and HALF DAY DISMISSAL-No Lunches Monday, February 19: NO SCHOOL-Presidents Day Here is a look at this week: This week: Spalding- Your scholar will have 28 new words this week. Each night, your scholar will receive a piece of paper, in their red folder, with the 10 or 8 words that were studied in class that day. Please dictate the words to your scholar 3 times in different orders. As your scholar writes the words, they need to also do the markings for each word. Please have your scholar write their words in their best Spalding handwriting. Markings need to be done on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Thursday you should dictate all 28 words to your scholar. Markings are not required on Thursday. ****If your child is misspelling a word, please mark it wrong and have them correct it on their homework. Scholars need to study phonograms 1-70 every night. If your scholar can say all 70 phonogram sounds, please practice having them write their phonograms as you dictate to them. Math- In math this week we will be starting our unit on MENTAL math. Students will be learning how to use strategies to make 10 and 100, mentally to add or subtract. There will be a quiz on Friday. History- We will be learning about the Westward Expansion. We will be studying about Lewis and Clark, the invention of the Steamboat, and the Oregon Trail. Please make sure to have your child talk about what they learned from that day before they complete their homework summaries. Literature- We will continue reading Cricket in Times Square chapters 6-9. We had a wonderful seminar on what is want. We discussed the characters in the book and the wants they desire. Students discussed the importance of wanting for your Reason and not just your Appetite. It was the best seminar we have had! Writing/Grammar- We will be writing our own summaries and using a checklist to make sure the sentences include, 5 parts of a sentence, best handwriting, and make sense from the story exert we have read. Tuesday and Wednesday we will learn how to multiply and divide by 10s. On Thursday we will review unit 7, look for a review worksheet to come home. Friday we will take our unit 7 test. Please continue to count by 4s, 5s, and 10s this week. We have been counting up and down in class to help memorize these facts. History- We will be learning about the War of 1812. I would like for the students to come home and tell you what they learned for that day before they complete their history homework. Please have your scholar complete the homework every night in their journals. There will be a review on Thursday and a test on Friday. Literature: We will start Cricket in Times Square. This week we will read chapters 1-5. Writing/Grammar: We will continue to study nouns, verbs, and adverbs. Students will be writing sentences and replacing given adverbs to an adverb of their choice. We are practicing writing beautiful sentences that include the 5 parts of a sentence: 1. Capital letter at the beginning 2. Noun 3. Verb 4. Does the sentence make sense 5. End Marks. These are good prompts to ask your child, if they have included the 5 parts of a sentence, when writing their History or Science sentences. Last week we had some issues on the playground with showing Friendship. We as a class will be practicing the virtue of friendship this week. If you have any questions please email me! On Thursday, please dictate the 20 words to your scholar, checking their spelling. Markings are not required on Thursday! The spelling test and phonogram test will be on Friday. Please continue to study phonograms 1-70 every night. For spelling tests, I will be marking words as incorrect if there is a capital letter instead of a lower case. We have been working on handwriting and where capitals belong. Please email me if you have questions or concerns on this matter. Math- We will begin to study multiplication and division of 5s. Please practice skip counting by 5s with your child to support them in solving these problems. We will also be reviewing dividing with remainders and odd/even numbers. There will be no quiz or test this week. Science-Tuesday we will share our projects with the class to prepare for Wednesday! History-We will begin to study the US Constitution. This week will we be discussing James Madison and the three branches of government. Literature- We will continue to read Sarah Plain and Tall. The scholars are enjoying this book and the importance of family. Writing and Grammar- We will continue to learn about nouns, verbs, and adverbs. We will be forming sentences using adverbs this week. This week is Project Week! Please look in your child's red folder or your email for information regarding the model that your child is required to build and bring into class on Friday, January 12. Upcoming Events: January 8-10: Half Day Dismissal-NO LUNCHES January 11-12: FULL DAYS January 15: MLK Jr. Day, No school January 17: Project Night - 6:00 - Attendance is mandatory! Here is a look at this week! Spalding- Due to the writing portion of Project Week we will only have 15 new words this week. Please dictate the 5 words to your scholar 3 times in different orders each night. As your scholar writes the words, they need to also do the markings for each word. Please have your scholar write their words in their best Spalding handwriting. Markings need to be done on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday! Thursday you should dictate all 15 words to your scholar. Markings are not required on Thursday. The spelling and phonogram test will be on Friday. ****If your child is misspelling a word, please mark it wrong and have them correct it on their homework.****** *****Scholars need to study phonograms 1-70 every night. If your scholar can say all 70 phonogram sounds, please practice having them write their phonograms as you dictate to them.****** Math- We will begin multiplying by 4s. Please practice skip counting by 4s with your child to master these facts. Science- We will continue to study the digestive system. Please be sure to work with your child a little each night to build a model of one of the parts of the Digestive System (mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine). A Project Week folder was sent home today, Monday. You will find information in the folder on the digestive system. Please use this information to help you construct the model. Please be sure to send the Project Week folder back to school each day, as we will complete the writing portion in class. Literature- We will begin reading Sarah Plain and Tall.
